Base jumping is a sport that involves a parachute to jump off fixed objects. The acronym for base is Building, Antenna (tower), Span (bridge, Arch) and Earth (Cliff face, Mountain).
Base Jumping was first recognised as a sport in the late 1970's and interest picked up throughout the 1980's. Many people who had tried skydiving saw this as another challenge in the pursuit of the next adrenaline fix.
Many of the objects that can be used for a base jump are actually illegal and many people have been prosecuted for what the authorities deem reckless.
